CHICAGO
Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay. Mon 18 Jan
words JAMIE REES photo CATHERINE ASHMORE
It had probably the toughest act in musical theatre to follow. Chicago moved into the Wales Millennium
Centre hot on the heels of the huge triumph that was Les Miserables which, I think it’s safe to say, has been
the highlight of WMC’s impressive first five years.
With that in mind it had the potential to disappoint massively, especially with an ex-soap star with no real
musical pedigree in one of the leading roles alongside Marti Pellow as Billy Flynn.
Unfortunately, Pellow was not great, with his weak acting skills letting him down. The big surprise of the eve-
ning had to be Emma Barton as Roxie Hart and having seen Ute Lemper, Ruthie Henshall and Bebe Neuwirth
on Broadway in this role, the former Eastender certainly had a lot to live up to. Without any question though,
a musical star was born here. She had a touch of Ruthie Henshall about her performance for sure, and she
did it very well indeed. Admittedly her dancing was not the best on the night, but she more than made up for
it by playing to the comedy of the piece and belting her numbers out superbly.
The supporting cast were excellent – they had to be, as the show depends on it. The band was up-beat as
always, and for once WMC’s sound technicians seemed to get the sound right on opening night. A novel
experience indeed!
With Hairspray around the corner and whispers of some of musical land’s big hitters coming this way in the
near future – well, the future looks sequinned and starry to say the least.
