CARDIFF ARTS
INSTITUTE WINS
POPULARITY
CONTEST
If you were anywhere near Facebook or Twitter
last month, chances are you’ll have heard about
the competition to secure Ellie Goulding, who
was on offer to the venue that managed to
drum up the most support from its fans on the
interweb. Cynics might say there’s something
slightly undignifi ed about dangling a hip upstart
over the hungry mouths of three of Cardiff’s
best venues, then watching them duke it out in
a popularity contest that asks the audience to
pin their colours to a venue, but we thought it
was pretty funny. Ironically, South Wales’ own
hip upstart Cardiff Arts Institute came out on top,
thanks largely to an all-out social media assault,
and will be hosting the hyper-hyped Welsh singer
on Thurs 4 Feb. Ellie will reportedly be playing,
among other things, a cover of Sweet Disposition
by The Temper Trap and tickets have already
been snapped up.

ONE TOUR
In typically twee fashion, cutesy comedians Josie
Long, Isy Suttie and Maeve Higgins are embarking on
a micro-tour of Wales, arriving at Aberystwyth Arts
Centre on Wed 3 Feb. Josie Long is the most familiar
name here, having won a clutch of awards over the
last decade for her brand of adorably kooky comedy
Designer Violence are a young, talented collective which should be utterly, utterly hateful but isn’t at
of artists, designers and illustrators who make all. Isy Suttie will be familiar to most as the hilarious,
stuff look pretty. They’re launching a new range of role-playing geek Dobby from Peep Show, while Maeve
tees and they’re looking for artists to come up with Higgins has been performing and touring since 2004.

RETURN OF
THE MACK
BAFTA-winning comedian Lee Mack is in Cardiff on his new tour
across the nation. The Would I Lie To You star has added 27 extra
dates to his new tour, most of which have, remarkably, already sold
out. The immensely popular comedian, loved for his witty cheek and
his piercing banter is bound to fi ll St David’s Hall with belly laughs
start to fi nish on Thurs 25 Feb. The racy stage artist is said to have perfected
his family-unfriendly act upon his return from working with Kelsey Grammer in
the US. The show will not be for the ill-tempered as Mack often bombards his audience
with repartee, but fortunately he’s humble enough to make a joke or two at his own expense. What
a nutter. Admission: £18.50.
