Veterans Enjoy a Wee Dram!
Watching a documentary about recent confl icts moved businessman Eddie
McKenna to contact Colin McPhail, Recreation Manager of the Erskine
Veterans Home in Bishopton, to offer the veterans a “Dram of Whisky”.
When Colin realised, however, that the “dram” was in fact thousands
of pounds worth of malt and blended whiskies with a gallon of whisky
thrown in, he asked Eddie’s permission to use some of the whisky for a
“Whisky Tasting” afternoon. Eddie was really pleased that his whisky,
collected over many years, would be used in this way, bringing so much
pleasure to the veterans and had no hesitation in saying yes.
So the veterans were greeted to a very patriotically decorated hall with
Scottish music playing and all of the staff in traditional Scottish dress,
which of course all added to the very convivial atmosphere. Then it was
down to the serious business of the whisky tasting. Over 50 bottles of
old favourites such as Glenfi ddoch, Glenmorangie, Cardhu and Balvenie
to the more elusive Glenfardas, Provence and from the oldest distillery
in Crieff, Perthshire the famous Glenturret malt ensured there was
something for everyone.
Colin McPhail said: “The
veterans have had a ball;

The budget for Renfrewshire Council was set on Monday
18th January. I have received many calls in relation
to the changes in school transport provision which
I am continuing to pursue on constituents behalf. To
protect devolved budgets as far as possible and to be
realistic about the current and fi nancial future years the
council are no longer able to provide the free school
transport provision for secondary schools as it is right
now. The provision of FREE school transport where no
safe walking route exists will continue. If you feel that
there is no safe walking route then please feel free to
get in touch with me to act on your behalf. What is
changing is the qualifying distance in secondary schools, which will be in
line with the statutory provision, similar to other nearby Councils such
as East Renfrewshire and Ayrshire. Whilst Renfrewshire can no longer
afford the increasing cost of transport with secondaries, primary school
provision will be protected. I understand that there are many concerns
regarding this issue. I would like to welcome people to contact me with
their concerns in order to try and reassure them and provide further
information.
Details of my weekly surgeries are available from the council website
