Unfortunately, I was too late to get something in for
January’s edition of the Advertizer, but I would like to
wish everyone a belated happy New Year. Talk Talk

worked very hard over the four weeks or more of
unprecedented freezing weather, reportedly the
worst prolonged cold snap for 30 or 40 years, but despite this they had to
prioritise areas that were gritted. However, I feel we do need to review
the way we do some things. One way could be for the council to ensure
grit bins around the district are filled in advance of any cold snap and
then do its best to keep topping them up when necessary so as to allow
residents who are able to help themselves, and help their neighbours
who may be less able, to spread grit around their own pavements and
driveways. One thing we must be thankful for though, is that at the last
Scottish Parliament budget an amendment by the opposition to cut the
winter maintenance budget across Scotland by £10 million per annum
failed otherwise things may have been even worse over the past few
weeks!
At the time of writing this article, the Scottish Government Justice
Secretary Kenny MacAskill is due to come to Inverclyde to launch the
second phase of the “No Knives, Better Lives” campaign. Kenny launched
this project in Port Glasgow in 2009 having listened to the concerns of
Inverclyde constituents about the affects that knife crime has on our
communities and, to date, the reports we hear since the campaign began
are very encouraging as we see many of these violent crimes reducing.
Now the Cabinet Secretary is returning to launch the second phase.
