Working their socks off!
Trying to a avoid the mention of snow and ice, freezing temperatures,
burst pipes, or worse still, earthquakes, I was wondering what to write
for the editorial this month. And then this morning, the last chance for
changes at the printer, I went to the front door to pick up the mail and,
eureka, a pair of socks! No, I’ve not lost it!
If your Postie is anything like ours, they are normally burdened with
bundles of junk-mail. Often bling and tacky material, making wild or
exaggerated claims, unrealistic offers, or deals too good to be true; free-
phone now! The majority simply goes from the front door to the back
door and straight into the recycling.
So, what about the socks? A pair of red socks, neatly packaged and
dropped politely through the letter box; although I am not sure the Postie
actually brought them. A simple and innovative (and practical) marketing
idea; from a reputable estate agent, with a simple message, “working
their socks off”. It defi nitely brought a smile to my face and certainly
didn’t share the same demise as the other trash.
One thing for sure, our local Posties deserve a round of applause for
“working their socks off” - in all weather. And I was trying to avoid it,
but they did particularly well during the recent cold-snap which brought
the country to a stand-still. Well done! And if you ever wondered how
diffi cult some letter boxes can be, pick up your mail, go outside and try
to deliver it through your own door; you may be surprised.

Hugh Fraser, who runs the local window repair company “1-on-1 Double
Glazing”, is offering a special discount for the month of February -
three hinge repairs, or misted unit repairs, for the price of two.
The life of a double-glazed unit can easily be extended with
appropriate maintenance. The main structure of the frame will last
for many years, but the mechanical items such as handles and hinges
can be susceptible to wear’n’tear. The rubber seals which retain the
glazed-unit within the frame deteriorate over time. Occasionally the
‘vacuum’ seal on the double-glazed unit fails and the window will mist
up. However, don’t despair since all these items are repairable with
nominal disruption, especially when compared to completely ripping
the whole window section in order to fi t a new one; not to mention
lower cost of repair.
