10th December - We were treated to an unusual talk entitled “Via
Ferrata” by speaker Alan Bailey. Via Ferrata are, in effect, a range of
protected scrambling routes in mountainous areas, and comprise skilfully
installed fixed cables, ladders and gorge-spanning bridges, which assist
climbers to ascend to high levels. Many of the original via ferrata were
made for military purposes to facilitate the movement of troops and
equipment across mountainous country. Alan made a fine presentation
with excellent photos of some of his climbs in the Italian Dolomites. Via
Ferrata are widespread in the
Alps and there are even one
or two in the U.K. In Italy,
the routes are interspersed
with “rifugios” which are
hostels providing overnight
accommodation with food,
drink and entertainment. In
the absence of our President
the meeting was conducted
by Junior Vice President Dr
Peter Stromberg.
