It didn’t even occur to me that his funds might be just as limit-
ed as mine. He gave me the money without asking why – but after
I returned with my purchase, his face fell. “That’s what you spent my
$10 on?” he asked limply.
I felt so awful that later that day, I begged $10 from my dad, who
was at the conference with me, so I could pay him back. Of course,
that meant having to admit to Dad my foolish impulse buy, and also
my remorse. I seem to remember a lot more beach time and a lot less
window shopping after that.
