Tchaikovsky Manfred Symphony Presented by RTÉ
Byronic Hero
Performing Groups
Described by Martha Argerich as ‘one of the most outstanding pianists of
his generation’, the brilliant Sergio Tiempo makes his RTÉ NSO début in the
fl amboyant and mercurial Paganini Variations. In Tchaikovsky, Manfred seeks
self-oblivion, haunted by memories of forbidden love…the mix of brooding,
fi re and fantasy is quintessential Tchaikovsky and entirely at one with Byron’s
Gothic poem.

world of the Japanese geisha, a world of red silk and rituals, imbued with fragile
beauty. Lyric Opera revives its highly acclaimed production of Madama Butterfl y
with the stunning Korean soprano, Jee Hyun Lim. Miss Limm received huge ac-
claim at the New York City Opera for her interpretation of this role. Irish mezzo,
Dorren Curran again makes a welcome return to sing Butterfl y’s faithful servant,
Susuki with American Tenor, Ryan McPherson sings the cad American Captain,
B.F Pinkerton. Lyric Opera favourite, Wyn Pencarreg, sings the role of Sharp-
less. Cio-Cio San clings to her love for Pinkerton in the face of his prolonged
absence, but his return fails to bring the happiness she longed for. The betrayal
and the exploitation of this gentle heroine continues to be as acute and shock-
ing as ever.
