EI Awards
James Smith FEI
As President of the Energy Institute (EI), I am delighted
to introduce the EI Awards supplement, published in
celebration of the 2009 EI Awards winners. This year marks
the 10th anniversary of the Awards and the quality and
variety of entrants has continued to increase throughout
the decade.
As you know, the EI exists as the pre-eminent professional body working
to promote good practice and professionalism in the energy industry, and
running this Awards competition is one of the many ways in which we serve
the industry and recognise its people.
We had another excellent collection of entries this year with record numbers in
some categories and international entrants, including from places as far afi eld
as Iran, Ecuador and South Africa. We have heard about many organisations
and individuals whose achievements have raised the benchmarks of quality
and commitment to their work to the highest level.
The categories – among them Innovation, Technology, Safety, Environment
and Community Initiative – demonstrate the EI’s continuous commitment to
supporting the energy industry and its people in the development of solutions
to the world’s energy challenges.
I must congratulate all short-listed entrants for the quality of their work.
Everyone should be proud of their achievement and their contribution to
raising the standards of professionalism and excellence in the industry. At this
time it is important to attract new talent and to retain the talent we already
have. I hope these examples will act as an encouragement to others and an
inspiration to us all.
Our thanks go as always to our independent panel of judges for their integrity
in reaching their decisions. I don’t envy them their diffi cult task!
I’d also like to thank our sponsors – AMEC, the Environment Agency,
ExxonMobil, Expert Alumni, Nexen, Shell and TAQA Bratani – whose generosity
and support help us make these important Awards possible. And fi nally, a
thank you to ABB Engineering Services who sponsored the welcome drinks
reception on the night and to our guest speaker and MC for the ceremony,
Gabby Logan.
