Robert Trujillo and his incredible
commitment to art activism is a perfectly
rhythmic story. It’s clear that to spread social
and political awareness to minorities via visual
arts is Trujillo’s life’s work and his heart’s
fulfillment. Trujillo has lended himself in the
creation, planning, and implementation of two
prolific art activism initiatives, Trust Your
Struggle; a collective of visual artists who
creatively equip local communities with self-
affirming cultural knowledge, and Come Bien
Books; a collaboration of illustrators and
wordsmiths who develop multi-cultural
literature that is intended to bring pride and
familiarity to its readers- young and old alike.
In developing Trust Your Struggle, Oakland,CA
born and bred Trujillo surrounded himself with
likeminded Bay Area-based artists who
wanted to spark the minds of their community
and more specifically, the often misunderstood
youth thereof. As such, Trust Your Struggle has
grown into a collective of visually artistic
creatives of African-American, Latino, Filipino, and Native American ethnic backgrounds who
methodically initiate ground-swelling community involvement in political and social awareness on
both the local and national levels. Workshops, Mural Tours, and Art Shows are the vehicles Trust
Your Struggle uses to incite change in the lives of minorities who feel voiceless or perhaps even
numb to the daily struggles of injustice.
