The 2006 Mélange Blanc from Water-
brook Winery in Walla Walla has nearly
White Stuff
every white varietal in it you can con-
jure. Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Viog-
nier, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon
Blanc and Muscat Canelli create layer
after layer of flavors in the palate. This
wine is both dry and sweet at the same
time. Bright, lively and lingering on the
finish, you’ll pick up notes of pear, lime,
honey, white pepper and apple. With this
many different varietals, you’re likely to
taste countless different flavors.
Obviously a wine this complex and
pleasing to the palate will be very food
friendly. Drink this one by itself, as the
aperitif, the main course, dessert or all
three. (I’m getting my next dinner idea.)
Any light food — flaky pastries, fresh cut
fruit, an omelet or other breakfast fare
— would be best suited for this wine.
While I’m certainly not going to
chastise any of my fellow wine lovers
for opening a good bottle of Merlot this
January, I’d encourage you to try one
of these white wines. Chill them in the
fridge, and pull them out a half hour
before serving. That should give you the
perfect temperature for any of these great
wines to be enjoyed!
