apanese karate is a modern martial a
and sport that is built on the foundation

of many ancient combat arts. It provides
students with a great outlet for stress, a
strong workout, and a calm mind. The calm
mind is often the benefit students enjoy most.
This calm mind is known as mushin, or ‘no

mind’ in Japanese. It is one of the many posi-
tive aspects of training that students can take

out of the dojo and into every aspect of their
lives.
Mushin is not just a state of mind that can
be achieved during combat. It should be used
when performing any martial arts technique.
For instance, karate practitioners perform
kata, which is basically a prearranged fight
SOLD
that is performed alone. Achieving mushin
while performing kata allows the martial
artist to execute each movement flawlessly.
Once mushin is attained through many years

Another concept is Zanshin. It refers to a
state of awareness or relaxed alertness. The
literal translation is “remaining mind.” In
karate, it means staying alert. It is also used
to remind a student that there should be
additional focus and alertness remaining after
a technique has been completed. The prac-
titioner does not throw a punch and relax;
he or she remains focused. A martial artist
should be aware of his or her surroundings
at all times without having to think about
it, whether they just finished a technique or
after ordering a drink at the coffee shop.
These concepts can be applied to daily
life. Releasing the tension and forgetting the
“what-if’s” allows the speaker to present natu-
rally and without apprehension. Mushin and
Zanshin can be useful for many of life’s daily
tasks such as taking exams, hitting a golf ball,
going on a first date or a job interview. Being
mindful of the present instead of worrying
about the outcome should assist anyone in
achieving his or her best. Concepts like these,
self-discipline, and confidence are just a few
of the many benefits of studying karate.
