A new employment and
remuneration survey has
found technical professionals
in mining are optimistic about
their salaries and conditions.

More than four-fifths of technical
professionals in the mining industry believe
insufficient investment in exploration may
cause a downturn in the industry, according
to the latest ausiMM employment and
remuneration survey.
the survey of 933 workers in september
2009 found graduate starting salaries were
lower overall compared with the previous
year, with 20 per cent of respondents
starting on an annual salary of $55,000 or
less compared with 16 per cent in 2008 and
15 per cent in 2007.
similarly, the number of graduates earning
$55,000 or more was 4 per cent lower than
in the 2008 and 2007 surveys.
the average base salary for respondents
was $167,000 (median $145,000), $8,000
higher than in the 2008 survey. the average
salary noted by 2009 survey respondents
a year ago was $161,300, $5,000 lower
than their current salary, supporting the
difference noted above between the 2009

the trend in base salaries over the past
three years shows marginal changes, with
