Named the world’s leading hydrometallurgy research provider by an independent review this year, the Parker Centre
has over 17 years experience in undertaking hydrometallurgy R&D that provides practical solutions and training to
clients in the global minerals industry.
The Centre is a multi-million-dollar collaborative venture between four Research Participants (CSIRO, Curtin
University of Technology, Murdoch University and the University of Queensland) and 22 minerals industry and mining
support sector Participants.
We generate research outputs that maximise returns from hydrometallurgical processing of mineral resources and
reduce environmental impacts of hydrometallurgical processes.
Our clients achieve cost-effective, reliable, maintainable, environmentally and socially acceptable commercial
outcomes through adoption of our technological advances and professional expertise. We work with many
companies involved in the minerals industry, including a growing international client base. Our clients range from
large multinationals to SMEs, and include mineral processors, engineering companies, equipment manufacturers
and reagent suppliers.
The outputs of our work have been applied widely throughout Australia and overseas: with independently estimated
benefits (delivered and expected) to industry worth over A$580 million (net present value) and rising.
Strong industry demand for our research capabilities has continued over the years, through the global mining booms
and downturns. There is no better example of this demand than the record annual industry investment (A$6.7 million)
in our activities in 2008-2009 by 104 individual industry end-users. Our investors included many of the world’s
biggest mining houses, such as the likes of Alcoa, Barrick Gold, BHP Billiton, Rio Tinto and Vale, who are among our
22 Industry Participants.
Our fundamental and applied research has helped hydrometallurgy plants to increase process efficiency and yield,
improve product quality, increase water recovery and minimise capital and operating costs. We also look to the future
as we undertake transformational research to develop innovative technologies to exploit low-grade ores or currently
uneconomic, untapped mineral deposits.
The full array of our Research Participants’ expertise and facilities can be brought to bear on any hydrometallurgy
problem. With over 100 researchers (chemists, metallurgists, mineralogists, microbiologists, fluid dynamicists and
chemical engineers), we can put together multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional teams to address technical challenges.
Our research spans atoms to processing plants. We have the capability to link microscopic understanding of the
underlying chemistry with the macroscopic performance of operating plants. We will go wherever in the world
our expertise is needed: our researchers have already worked at operating sites in Australia, North America, the
Caribbean, South America, Africa and Europe.
Our research capabilities extend beyond hydrometallurgy. We are applying traditional hydrometallurgy generic
technologies to non-traditional fields of application, for example to improving tailings dewatering in the Canadian oil
sands industry.
Our Education Program works to build capacity – people and skills – for the minerals industry. Our industry-oriented
PhD, MSc and Honours graduates trained in hydrometallurgy research are a valuable recruitment pool for industry,
and the research sector. We also run technical and professional development courses, and technology transfer
workshops, for industry professionals.
