GW S eW lcomes New Assistant Professor
The Women’s and Gender Studies department welcomes its newest
faculty member, Dr. Sarah Cervenak, jointly appointed with African American
Studies. After receiving an MA and PhD in
Performance Studies at New York University, Dr.
Cervenak most recently completed a postdoctoral teaching
fellowship at Stanford University. Her research interests lie
in exploring racial, gender, and economic freedom in the modern
world. In regards to this, she is studying alternative ways in which
philosophical and performed resistance to racialized and/or gendered
captivity are enacted. Currently, she is engaging with playwright
Adrienne Kennedy’s work Funnyhouse of Negro and considering
the ways in which surrealist aesthetics, non-linear storytelling,
travel, noisy ghosts, and a supposed ‘neurotic’ and elusive main
character collaborate to produce the mode of black performance
characterized as a wandering. She is currently working on an essay
that explores the figurations of dignity, freedom, and abundance
in contemporary Black performances of scarcity.
Dr. Sarah Cervenak
Dr. Cervenak is teaching introductory courses in both oW men’s and Gender Studies and African American
Studies, and has developed a new course on Race, Gender, and Performance. As well, Dr. Cervenak has
been involved around campus, leading a post-performance discussion panel for Jane, guest lecturing in
the Dance department, and participating in the Community Discussion Series with AFS.
She is looking forward to meeting more students in the semesters to come, noting that she is lucky to be
included in the important conversations that have taken place in her classroom this fall. Dr. Cervenak
says this, combined with the support of the faculty, has made UNCG a great place to work.
