Day Trip'n

Season's Greetings!
Boulder City is abuzz with Holiday activities for the whole
family. Miss Amy’s Boulder City Ballet Company presents
The Nutcracker on December 11, 12, and 13; at this writing,
tickets are still available at just $20 per seat, $15 for seniors!
Truly a seasonal highlight of sights and sounds for the senses!
December 5 is a busy one for Boulder City with Santa’s
Picture Party from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Bicentennial
Park Gazebo. Will Santa be tuckered out when his Electric
Night Parade kicks off at 4:30? Wow, there’s still time to
head for Lake Mead Boat Owner’s Parade of Lights!
December 12, Henderson offers their WinterFest Parade
at 10 a.m., also a craft fair, activities for youngsters, and ice
skating.
Neat Nevada Notes: Perched at 6,000’ in the Virginia
Range only 15 miles from Carson City, is Virginia City, once
a boisterous mining community of 15,000 residents. It’s
about 14,000 shy today, but boasts a million or so annual
visitors. The Comstock Lode was discovered in 1859. As
the first major silver ore deposit in the country, it ultimately
yielded between 4 and 7 hundred million dollars worth of
silver! A little bit bawdy and bursting with history, in 1961
Virginia City received designation as a National Historic
Landmark. Every October, 3-person teams compete in
World Championship Outhouse Races, and there is a Parade
featuring the VC Plungerettes. The event was born when
the State Legislature banned outhouses in the early 1990s…
only in Nevada! International Camel Races take off in
September. Alice Springs, Australia, Virginia City’s sister
city, hosts Camel Races too. Quirky but not unique to Virginia
City is the Mountain Oyster Festival every March.
th
Traditional events celebrate 4 of July and an International
Chile Cook-off. The Bucket of Blood, one of my favorites,
hails from 1876. It has been owned and operated by the
McBride Family since 1931, www.bucketofblood

Twain’s “Roughing It” gives readers an intriguing perspective
on Virginia City, and is available to read at no charge on-
