Tom Mockridge CEO, Sky Italia
Despite challenges raised by the politicised
nature of the Italian media business and the
withdrawal of pubcaster Rai’s thematic chan-
nels from the platform, Sky Italia managed to
end its 2008-09 fiscal year with 4.8 million
subscribers. Despite signs that competition
from Mediaset is beginning to take its toll and
earlier problems over exclusivity of football
rights, Sky Italia has nevertheless showed
what can be possible in a market with a
strong free to air tradition and a hostile com-
petitive environment. The operator recently
announced plans to roll out a USB device that
allows its high-definition subscribers to access
a range of digital terrestrial channels. It also
plans to increase its line-up of HD channels to
30 by the end of 2010.
Tom Mockridge has been CEO of Sky Italia
since its formation in April 2003.
He assumed the position after moving to
Italy in August 2002 to lead the merger
process between Sky’s two predecessor com-
panies, Stream and Telepiù. In May 2008 he
was given the additional role of CEO,
European Television at News Corp, where he
oversees the company’s TV operations in
Europe outside the UK. Since February 2009
he has been also appointed as a Non-
Executive Director of BSkyB.
Prior to coming to Italy, Mockridge was CEO
of Independent Newspapers Ltd (INL) in New
Zealand, a listed company controlled by News
Corp. INL in-turn controlled the listed pay-TV
group, Sky New Zealand, of which he was
chairman. He has also served as CEO of Foxtel
and in various roles for News Corp in Asia.
