“It’s the most wonderful time of the year…”
Winter always puts me in a cheerful mood. For some reason
being able to wear a coat and a scarf always puts me in the
holiday spirit. I know, our winters are not exactly snow-filled and
rarely even drop below 60 degrees, but being able to accessorize
makes me feel like the holidays are here. I love walking through
the gayboorhood and seeing the holiday displays in store win-
dows come to life with their twinkling lights and gift ideas. As you
can see, December makes this bitch’s cold-hearted exterior melt
away revealing an angel underneath.
So Ruby and I have been planning for December because there
are plenty of events this month and that means many outfits to be
planned and schedules to arrange. The holidays are about family
and getting together with friends and loved ones in the spirit of
giving, but let’s not forget that a well-planned social agenda is
the best gift we can give ourselves. This month there are plenty
of events to fill the gaps between attending dinner at aunt Lulu’s
and that gift exchange at work. Here are some of the fun events
this month where I hope to see some of my readers.
The Ten Tenors are in town December 8 – 14 at the Civic Theater
and I know only one is gay but who cares when they all sing won-
derfully? Besides, I can appreciate manly eye candy. For tickets
go to
broadwaysd.com. It doesn’t get much better than being
serenaded by ten handsome guys.
One of the things I look forward to every winter is the Fantasy
on Ice at Horton Plaza. I’m no Michelle Kwan but I feel like an ice
princess at least for a couple of hours. Weeknights are usually
better for beginners because it’s less crowded but weekends are
great because I love to people watch, which is a nice break from
falling on my on my assets.
Another favorite activity that only comes around once a year is
The Grinch at The Old Globe Theater. I like to get my tickets early
and seeing this kids’ favorite come to life. It takes me back to my
childhood and brings out the little girl in me as I watch the Grinch
and the citizens of Whoville. Get your tickets now because the
show always sells out. You can get tickets online at
oldglobe.org.
The holidays aren’t only about fun though, they’re also about
giving and at this time of year I like to encourage my readers to
give back to the community. There are plenty of organizations
that need your support. You can donate money, goods or time
and every one of them counts. Keep and eye out for any fund
raisers around the hood. Plenty of our local bars and clubs open
their doors and host different events so remember to support or-
ganizations like San Diego Pride’s Milk Money campaign, Mama’s
Daisy anD Ruby’s
Kitchen, The Center and of course, the Imperial Court’s annual toy
drive.
ADVENTURES
I know I haven’t written for a couple of months, but trust me a
girl needs a break once in a while, especially now that in addition
to attending my usual assortment of events I’m also hosting the
fabulous Wednesday night’s drag show at Bacchus House! But
now I’m rested and in my groove and I have my wig on straight
and I’m back in front of the computer.
Have a fun and safe holiday season!
