Leonard Bernstein’s Mass
Grab your tie-dyes and your love beads and come back to the Age of Aquarius
as La Jolla Symphony & Chorus presents the San Diego premiere of Leonard
Bernstein’s stunning, often controversial Mass, one of the iconic symphonies of the
1970s. Commissioned by Jackie Kennedy for the opening of The Kennedy Center,
Mass follows the liturgy through the Celebrant, portrayed by UCSD Gospel Choir
Director Ken Anderson with frequent interruption and commentary from the “con-
gregation.” The production includes three choruses, rock and jazz bands, orchestra
and pre-recorded music. Steven Schick conducts. They offer three performances
of this rarely-heard theatre piece, directed by Charlie Oates of the UCSD Theater
Department. Free pre-concert lecture one hour prior.
La Jolla Symphony & Chorus’ production of Mass plays December 4 -6
at the Mandeville Auditorium, UCSD.

The New CeNTury—a Big gay comedy from PauL rudnick
Take a humor break with playwright Paul Rudnick, who also penned Jeffrey,
Valhalla and The Most Fabulous Story Ever Told. The New Century weaves the lives of
a Jewish matron, a flamboyant aging homosexual and a Midwestern craftswoman.
The result is an outrageous and poignant comedy. Directed by Igor Goldin, who
took the helm for last summer’s Diversionary hit Yank!, the show is full of well-timed
snappy one liners and Oy! nudity… Bless the little children, leave them at home!
The New Century plays December 3 – January 2 at the Diversionary Theatre.

The eighT: reiNdeer MoNologues
Dubbed “a dark, dark Christmas comedy,” scandal erupts at the North Pole when
one of Santa’s eight tiny reindeer accuses him of sexual harassment. As mass media
descends, the other reindeer demand to share their own perspectives which seems
to implicate everyone from the littlest elf to the tainted Saint himself. Written by Jeff
Goode, this over-the-top premise leads audiences through a night of outrageous,
tasteless and witty humor.
The Eight: Reindeer Monologues plays December 4 - December 20 at the Compass Theatre

iT’s a woNderful life: a live radio Play
Adapted for the stage by Joe Landry, the classic It’s a Wonderful Life based on the
film starring Jimmy Stewart returns to Cygnet. What is “A Live Radio Play?” Accord-
ing to Landry in a September 2008 interview with Mark Smith, artistic director of the
Legacy Theatre: “What uniquely separates a ‘radio play’ from a ‘regular’ play is the
style of theatrical storytelling. In the ‘radio plays’ I’ve written thus far, (It’s a Wonderful
Life and Vintage Hitchcock) the audience is invited to experience the magic of a live
1940’s radio broadcast. The golden age of old time radio is recreated using a handful
of actors who play the dozens of characters in the stories and create sound effects
and musical accompaniment to assist in engaging the imagination.”
It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play plays now – December 27 at the Cygnet Theatre.
