“It’s the most wonderful time of the year…”
Winter always puts me in a cheerful mood. For some reason being able
to wear a coat and a scarf always puts me in the holiday spirit. I know,
our winters are not exactly snow-filled and rarely even drop below 60
degrees, but being able to accessorize makes me feel like the holidays
are here. I love walking through the gayborhood and seeing the holiday
displays in store windows come to life with their twinkling lights and
gift ideas. As you can see, December does make this bitch’s cold-hearted
exterior melt away revealing an angel underneath.
Ruby and I have been planning for December because there are plenty
of events this month and that means many outfits to plan and schedules
to arrange. The holidays are about family and getting together with
friends and loved ones, but let’s not forget that a well-planned social
agenda is the best gift we can give ourselves. There are plenty of events
to fill the gaps between attending dinner at aunt Lulu’s and that gift
exchange at work. Here are some of the fun events this month where
I hope to see you.
Holidays are better when love and children are around. I love to see
a child’s eyes light up when they open a gift. This year we can all make
a child’s Christmas special and magical this holiday season by partici-
pating in the toy drive for children affected by HIV, sponsored by AIDS
Service Center and Equality Network. Bring an unwrapped, new toy to
Fubar, Obar Restaurant, Santa Monica Car Wash, St. Felix Restaurant, The
Gold Coast or The Yogurt Stop before Tuesday, December 15. For more
information, please log in to
aidsservicecenter.org. Also, if you bring an
unwrapped toy to Fubar on any Wednesday night for the “The Classic
Game Show Hour,” you will receive a free shot and free admission to the
party! This is the season when it pays to be generous.
Sunday, December 6, I’m going to be attending the Wiltern Theatre
as The Trevor Project presents an enchanted evening of irreverent
comedy, musical performances and special awards. Neil Patrick Harris of
How I Met Your Mother fame will be honored with the Trevor Life Award,
presented by Survivor host Jeff Probst. The event starts at 3:30 p.m. with
a hosted Absolute bar and silent auction, then it’s a VIP dinner at 5:00
p.m. It’s showtime at 6:00 p.m. and finally a VIP after-party dessert bash
at 8:00 p.m. The dress code is “L.A. Cocktail Chic” whatever that means.
Tickets for this event start at $50. and can be purchased at thetrevor-
project.org. It’ll be a fun and magical evening while raising money and
awareness for a good cause. ‘Tis the season to be jolly and merry—a
time of peace, love, happiness and giving (I know...it’s like a candy cane
melted my heart).
For years, the Shanti Orange County has hosted a wreath auction and
that tradition continues this year with the organization’s 12th Annual
Holiday Wreath Auction. The event will take place at Mozambique Res-
taurant in Laguna Beach on Monday, December 7 from 7:00 p.m. -10:00
p.m. Each wreath is special and made with love. They are created and
donated by local Laguna Beach artists and Shanti supporters. In this
Daisy anD Ruby’s
time of need, the community comes together to help raise awareness of
ADVENTURES
HIV/AIDS and to ensure more help to all, especially those living with this
disease. For more information, please log onto
shantioc.org.
Trust me a girl needs a break once in a while, especially now that in
addition to attending the usual assortment of events, I’ve been running
around attending these holiday parties. For the holidays, I’m in my
groove, I have my wig on straight and I’m even typing with nails on!
Have a fun and safe holiday season.
