RENT
Rent is one of the most popular musicals in theater
history. The production is an update of Puccini’s La
Boheme and is set in the late 20th century in New York.
Gritty subject matter and powerful songs set out to
transform the tragic opera into a modern rock musical.
The story follows the lives of a group of young artists
living in the East Village. In addition to being too poor
to pay the rent, several of the members of the group
are also HIV positive. All of the members of this group

XANADU
Xanadu is the name of the Chinese province in
which Khan establishes his pleasure garden in a
poem. With that premise in mind, back in 1980,
they used it for the title and inspiration of a musi-
cal romance starring Olivia Newton-John. That
being said, yet another film musical has found
its way to the stage. The beautiful Kira, travels to
earth in this hilarious tale to inspire a struggling
young aspiring artist named Sonny to find his
passion. Along the way she introduces him to a
club owner, ultimately leading to a collaboration
to build the world’s first roller disco. A fringe ben-
efit is that he discovers true love in the process.
The show includes a collection of smash hit songs
by Tony Award nominee, Douglas Carter Beane.
Xanadu plays December 15-27 at The Orange County
Performing Arts Center. For tickets and more information
