Whether Katey Sagal has sashayed around with a cigarette as Peg Bundy, used her
exotic charms as the voice of Leela in Futurama, strutted as a harlot for the divine Ms.
M. or now, flown wild and ruthless in her latest television role as Gemma, she brings
forth an earthy and enticing essence to any material. Sagal’s first love, however, has
always been singing—and the Orange County Performing Arts Center is pleased
to welcome her for a special four-night engagement in their Cabaret Series from
December 10 to December 13 in the Samueli Theatre.
Rage: What do you have in store for us?
Katey Sagal: Well my show is mostly about music. I think a lot of people are thinking
I’m going to get up and tell jokes, but I don’t. People seem to think I’m amusing, but
it’s not intentional (laughter). If it’s a lucky night, I might get a few laughs. I play music.
Most of it I’ve written over the years—it’s just songs that I’ve always wanted to sing
and I do a little bit of talking, I tell some stories…you know, about growing up in
Hollywood and just my perception of things. I have a great band and I love to sing. So
it’s mostly a night about music, that’s what I would call it.
Rage: What are some of the musical styles?
KS: I would say it’s more contemporary, it’s kind of soulful and you know a little pop,
folk. Soulful. It’s not the American songbook, I’ll tell you that! (laughter).
Rage: Who did you enjoy listening to growing up? Who inspired you when you first discovered
you wanted to be a singer?
KS: Oh well, let’s see, growing up I used to listen to Laura Nyro all the time. Laura
Nyro was very inspirational to me. And then I listened to The Rolling Stones, then
Muddy Waters. I sort of had an eclectic take, you know. But I really loved soul music
growing up and I really loved folk music. So, you know, it’s kind of a combo of the
things that I like that I lean toward. I toured a lot. I toured with Etta James and Bette
Midler and Bob Dylan.
Rage: Do you still talk with Bette Midler?
KS: I do. I just spoke to her recently.
Rage: Your parents were in show business. What did you experience and take away from growing
up in this environment?
KS: Well, I just always kind of say I was growing up in the family business. I watched
my parents work very hard. It wasn’t very glamorous (laughter). You know, it was long
hours and it was kind of what I do for a living now, which is really exciting and I feel
blessed to be able to do it, but it’s also a lot of work. The illusion of show business is
that it’s very fun and light, but that’s the illusion of it. It’s also been a lot of hard work.
Rage: So many people know you as Peg Bundy from Married With Children. Though, your new role
on FX’s Sons of Anarchy is quite intense.
KS: Well [Sons of Anarchy] broke all those stereotypes. Actually it’s been okay. I
seem to be able to find enough different kind of work. And the new show, well…
she’s a very different kind of mother.
Rage: For those who haven’t tuned in…tell me a little bit about Sons of Anarchy?
KatEy
KS: Sons of Anarchy takes place in the outlaws motorcycle world, it’s a drama and
it’s sort of about the family lives of this motorcycle club, and I play the matriarch. I’m
married to the president of the club and it stars myself and Ron Perlman and a guy
SaGal
name Charlie Hunnam, and your readers should check it out, it’s really good. It’s on
Tuesdays at 10:00 p.m. on FX. Soul SinGEr
Rage: Thanks so much. I look forward to seeing your performance.

KS: I hope people will come down and see the show. I think they will really enjoy it.
I’m really looking forward to it.
