HEY! Have you heard about the award winning, educational program on Valley Public Television called “Hey Kids
Let’s Cook?” It’s a ½ hour series which helps children and teens to develop cooking skills, demonstrates delicious
recipes, and teaches nutrition in a format that is both fun and informative. Hey Kids, Let’s Cook! features children
ranging in age from 6 to 14 who learn the tricks of the trade from foods and nutrition teacher Kathy Powers, former
Fresno Unified School District teacher of the year. Each week features a different original recipe that children can
learn to make themselves.
The show is targeted toward 8-14 year old kids and teens. Hey Kids, Let’s Cook attracts kids who love to cook and
those who want to learn. The series features recipes for a child’s passion in making and eating such foods as: per-
sonal pizzas, taco salad, smoothies, and chicken rice bowls. Focusing on nutrition in conjunction with preparation
techniques, Hey Kids, Let’s Cook gives kids the know-how to eat properly, and challenge them to do it themselves.
Children and teens love learning how to cook and feel empowered by learning skills that are usually only pos-
sessed by adults. As cooking programs for adults on television have increased in popularity in recent years, there
is a continuing lack of programming which targets a child or teen’s taste and skill level. Now with the number of
overweight and obese children at an alarming rate, there is a tremendous need to teach children healthy eating
habits, and to aid them in making nutritious food choices.
Hey Kids, Let’s Cook is a valuable, multidisciplinary, cooking show with an educational component which includes:
literacy, science, health education, math, life skills, and career exploration into an exciting and fun format which
children and teens will love.
