Twelve-Year-Old Race Car Driver Heads to North Carolina this Weekend
year. Because of her success, Jim and Valerie decided to take her to National Eastern Grands
in New Jersey. She won fi rst place for the entire Eastern Grands and it would have made her
the top novice driver on Eastern Coast in 2006.
Taylor, who races in quarter midgets and can stay in that division until she’s 16, now
competes in feature races that last 40 laps. The races usually include 10 or 11 cars running
six-second laps at 50 miles per hour on a 1/24 of a mile-long track.
She started racing bandolero race cars (mini race cars) a couple of months ago, and is
the fi rst girl in New England to ever race in one, Valerie said. Her bandolero car sports the
number 20, which NASCAR driver Logano currently features on his car. The number also
formerly belonged to Stewart before he changed racing teams.
On Saturday, Oct. 10 at Waterford, CT, Taylor became the fi rst female bandolero driver to
ever race on that track. Then on Saturday, Oct. 24 in Concord, she won both the qualifying
race and the feature race for the bandoleros. A couple weekends ago in Wall, NJ, she won

the week to prepare it for the competition on weekends. There’s a massive equation that goes into
preparing the car. The driver’s style, the weather, the feel of the car, the track, and even the competition
all need to be considered in the formula for success. Taylor likes to start from the back and come through
the fi eld. She likes the car when it is loose so the car is faster. She also tends to race better in the cooler
weather.
“You have to fi t the car to the kid,” said Jim, who values safety and equips Taylor with the necessary
safety items for her car and herself. “She can’t race without me and I can’t win without her. It’s a family Give yourself the gift of a beautiful face!

At the race, the Martins constantly make adjustments to the car to dial it into the race track, but it also
helps that Taylor has an instinctive feel for what is happening. She can feel when the vehicle is off and
