DAYS OF SIGNIFICANCE
The Sherman Cymru. Tue 17 Nov
words BEN BRYANT
The widely acclaimed Days Of Significance is a play that has been celebrated as much for its romantic
portrayal of working-class British life as its exploration of the isolation of returning soldiers. Interesting,
because in its run at The Sherman it tends to rely so heavily on stereotypes and gratuitous coarseness
that it could be mistaken for an episode of Little Britain. OK, so the urinating, vomiting, blood, brawls
and balls are pretty much the kind of thing you witness on St Mary Street on a Saturday night, but when
the characters start to recite catchphrases made famous by Vicky Pollard and The Catherine Tate Show,
it starts to become a little offensive. It revels in a constructed stereotype of the working classes that has
been lauded by critics for its realism, but frankly, you can’t help but feel that the play’s laughing at the
lug-headed mishaps of a bunch of wasters.
Next thing you know, we’re in Iraq and, what a surprise, it’s not the Friday night hoe-down the characters
were expecting. So far, so condescending. Thankfully, the tone of the play shifts. Its sympathy with lead
character Jamie’s isolation upon returning to the UK is tangible. The sneering, anti-war student Dan,
who plays a kind of redemptive character in the play’s first half, emerges as one of its most contemptible
characters. Bold, raucous and unquestionably affecting, its occasionally lazy dialogue might be crowd
pleasing, but it’s the only thing holding back this otherwise powerful play.
