“Na-na-na-na-nana I tell you I want you!” The Sky Sports News Band are in Cardiff and, though the
Borges-influenced stage show might reflect the group’s more literary leanings, they know their fan base is
largely made up of people more familiar with Fabio Capello than Funes the Memorious.
To their credit, Kasabian put on a hell of a show. Apart from the labyrinthine backdrop, they perform within
a digitally projected picture frame that bombards the lagered throng with quotations from the likes of Wilfred
Owen and Antonin Artaud. Frontman Tom Meighan urges Cardiff to put their hands in the air at least twice
every song (which, being an obliging lot, they willingly do), the band deliver a ferocious bass-heavy assault on
the senses which turn songs like Club Foot and the Glitter Band stomp of Empire into something approach-
ing stadium space-rock.
If it’s true that talent borrows and genius steals, then Kasabian clearly lean towards the latter. Nothing wrong
with having influences but the lawyers for the Doors might want to look at Thick As Thieves which steals a
little too literally from People Are Strange; Cutt Off is too similar to Just by Radiohead for comfort. Problem
is for Kasabian, it seems they want to be two bands at once. They clearly have higher artistic ambitions than
soundtracking the weekends of a generation but appeal too easily to the kind of punter whose idea of magic
realism involves crowd-surfing and hurling half-filled cups of lager towards the stage.
Nothing reflects this better than their spectacular but stage show – quoting great war poets whilst urging
thousands of young men to raise their hands and make some fucking noise feels at best, mildly ironic and at
worst smacks of empty rebellion and corporate angst. And the world already has one Primal Scream.
Great art provokes; compromise only seeks to illuminate the difference between influence and legacy. Kasa-
bian clearly aspire to being something greater than they are right now – whether their fans are listening is
