the feeling of sitting in an exhibition centre. Fellow diners included a table of Japanese
businessmen and their hosts, suggesting that this is a popular corporate venue.
Dinner started well: I had a king prawn and scallops dish with a mussel and vegetable broth
topped with parma ham, £6.50. It was rich and hearty with the flavours complementing
each other perfectly. The hot smoked salmon with fennel salad and islay whisky, £6.20,
was a winner with a whole fillet of freshly smoked salmon on a simple bed of salad.
My main course of collops of beef fillet with a vegetable parcel and a wild mushroom
and whisky sauce, £25.95, was not as satisfying. The beef was not as tender or
flavoursome as I’d hoped whilst the sauce was rather overpowering. The roast lamb
rump with honey roast parsnips and a red wine sauce, £21.50, was better but suffered
from a lack of greenery.
Perhaps we were being unduly critical because the bottle of wine we chose, a pinot
noir, was not good. We were expecting a rich, smooth as silk red but got instead a light,
almost fizzy version of the grape. We were back on track with the desserts; a velvety dark
chocolate mousse with whisky cream, £5.50, and a cheeseboard, £5.95, with Scottish
cheeses and oatcakes.
Would we come back to Amber? Yes, if we had friends who were lovers of whisky and
wanted a taste of ye olde Scotland. Personally, it’s not my favourite place to dine in the
city but to celebrate all things Scottish, particularly at this time of year, this restaurant,
with the castle as its next door neighbour, could be the place to do it.
