BOOKS
It’s worth reading...
MATTHEW PERREN RECOMMENDS
Lustrum by Robert Harris
This is the second volume of Robert Harris’s fictionalised account
of the life of Cicero following on from the earlier Imperium. Harris
is a masterful thriller writer and this is every bit as gripping as his
previous books. Filled with plot and counter-plot, intrigue and all
manner of political shenanigans; this wonderfully rich book will
keep you awake until the early hours. Some people complain that
novels based on history lack tension because we already know
how they are going to end. In the hands of a writer like Robert
Harris, it’s all about the journey.
Wildwood by Roger Deakin
This is one of the most beautiful books that I own. It’s almost
worth buying for the cover alone. If you do that, though, do
yourself a favour and read it too. Deakin writes with great
passion and deep knowledge about his subject – in this case
woodland. Yep. That’s right: trees. It’s the mark of a truly great
writer that he can write about almost anything and make it
interesting. The breadth of his knowledge and experience is
gathered in this fascinating wide-ranging book.
The Sartorialist by Scott Schuman
Scott Schuman is well known in fashion circles for his blog:
thesartorialist.com. He’s a self-taught photographer who has
worked for all the major fashion magazines. The blog features
photos he’s taken on his travels of ordinary people (although
it’s fun to spot the famous ones…) with extraordinary personal
style. Whilst it’s great to see so many well-dressed folk, there’s
also a wonderfully gleeful feeling you get when you spot a
total dog’s breakfast. Fashion is essentially frivolous but at the
same time there is nothing more profound than man’s desire
to express himself. And that, finally, is what this book is: a
testament to self-expression.
The Source by Michael Freeman
Thinking of doing a bit of DIY decorating? Tarting up your
kitchen perhaps? This fabulous book is jammed with
thousands of pictures from around the world of gorgeous
rooms, gardens, fixtures and fittings. All at a price of course.
I’m off to sell a kidney.
