Students may specialise in either Software Development or Systems Support to maximize their preparation for Higher Education or employment. ATTENDANCE: 2 years. ENTRY: 5 GCSEs at C including English and Maths or BTEC First Diploma at merit or distinction, plus a teacher/tutor reference supporting your application.
Bsc (Hons) Computer Systems Engineering
Accredited by University of Sunderland This degree will provide you with a sound knowledge of software engineering principles and practice, and give you the technical skills needed to develop such systems. You will write programs in languages such as Java, Visual Basic and Javascript and use other application software. ATTENDANCE: 3 years, 16 hours per week, maximum 3 days per week. ENTRY: Usually a Level 3 qualification such as a National Diploma or A-levels, although candidates without the usual entry requirements may be considered. Entry via UCAS website.
IT Practitioners (ICT Systems Support)
City and Guilds Level 2 Certificate This course has been developed to address the needs at the first level of those wishing to be employed in the IT industry. Knowledge and understanding will be developed including: maintenance of computer equipment, installing software and hardware and producing customer support materials. The award can lead to the vendor specific technician qualification Comp TIA+. ATTENDANCE: 3 hours per week for up to 30 weeks, times to be confirmed. ENTRY: Some basic knowledge of computer hardware and maintenance and a specific interest in becoming a computer technician.
Cisco Network Academy Programme (CNAP)
Pathway 1: Discovery This new curriculum programme is designed to teach students the skills needed to design build and maintain small to medium size networks. This Cisco course is ideal for those with minimum experience of networks. ATTENDANCE: Evenings for 3.5 hours (Thursdays) for up to 60 weeks (2 years) many could complete earlier with expected self learning, depending on pre knowledge. ENTRY: You should ideally possess an Intermediate technical qualification such as the OCR A+ or Level 3 IT
CompTIA A+ Accreditation This course has been created to develop troubleshooting skills in many aspects of PC and network maintenance. The qualification is assessed by means of two on-line exams. This is the most widely recognised qualification in the world for computer technicians. ATTENDANCE: 3 hours per week for up to 30 weeks, times to be confirmed. ENTRY: Some knowledge of computer hardware and maintenance, such as the Level 2 NCFE , City and Guilds or IPRO Certificate for IT Practitioners.
