In September, the quick-thinking actions
of two trainers at the New york Sports
Club (NySC) in Somers, New york, helped
save a member’s life. Frank Schmidt, 71,
went into cardiac arrest while sitting next
to one of the club’s cardio machines. NySC
trainers Melanie Scala and Deb Maher
sprang into action, and were able to revive
Schmidt using the club’s automated
external defibrillator (AED).
“One of the EMTs who arrived on the
scene said that the patient wouldn’t have
made it if he hadn’t received immediate
medical attention via the AED,” reports Lisa
Hufcut, the director of public relations for
