AllExpert.com, remembers Loyola University Football as follows:
Memories are all that are left of Loyola's once
powerhouse NCAA football program…
In 1967, Loyola University sponsored a club football team in the National
Club Football Association (NCFA). Loyola was one of four schools from
California (Saint Mary's College, the University of San Francisco and the
University of San Diego) to play in the NCFA. The entire association
comprised of at least 125 teams nationwide and was held in the same regard as
the three main levels of the NCAA and the NAIA. In 1969, the Loyola
University football team won the NCFA National Championship…
Gilmore Stadium is long gone, and as I said, Sullivan Filed is
barely perceptible. I am not sure if the University maintains a
live mascot; Little Iggy, but I doubt it.
I was too young to see any of this, but it has been lot of fun
researching the golden age of Loyola Football. And I am writing
a book on the life of Coach Tom Lieb.
In the end, that is all we have got, I guess; memories.
