CALF SHOW 2009
The buzz in the cattle sheds at Stoneleigh Park just gets louder every year with an
ever-expanding All Britain Calf Show. 25 years of structured organisation meant the
HYB were celebrating their Silver Jubilee this year and they did so alongside record
numbers of supporters from other dairy breed organisations. Alison Maddrell reports
Champion Izzy Whittaker from the
Western Club taking the honours in the
Mature Handlers class ahead of Kathryn
Hart of West Midlands. It was such a tight
race however that judge Crack struggled
to divide them again in the Championship,
awarding Kathryn Reserve Champion.
Izzy had been given the advantage as her
heifer always looked ready with faultless
head carriage and Kathryn was praised for
her control over her calf which gave her
the edge over Scotland South’s Ann Laird
in the earlier class.
Honourable Mention went to the
winning Intermediate Handler, another
from the West Midlands, Lucy Jones
following on from her success in February.
She had previously seen off a strong
challenge from Northumbria’s Victoria
Harrison in a class described by judge
Crack as ‘outstanding’, going on to
apologise for the length of time it had
taken him to sort them out. Lucy came
out on top of a very close placing as a
result of the ease at which she set up her
calf and allowing it to rest. Her relaxed
manner was enough to gain the red
ribbon but Victoria earned brownie points
for her uniform style moving round the
ring and her obvious ring presence and
ABOVE & RIGHT Champion Holstein Calf was B & L
Whitfield’s entry, Alderbarrow Samuel Carla led by
Jonathan Cope. Judge David Crack commented that
she had the best front end he had ever seen on a calf.
