FRIESIAN LONGEVITY
INTRODUCING A HIDDEN GEM
T
he Castledale herd based in Northern Ireland and managed by the Stockdale
family, enjoyed a great day with the classifi er recently when they achieved
15 fi rst time EX, 12 multiple EX and 13 VG’s, a great achievement by anyone’s
standards. This includes an impressive three 94 point, multiple E cows.
The fi rst is Castledale Jade 4 BFE94-6E by home-bred Castledale Alfred who has
completed over 90 tonnes of milk in 12 lactations without losing a month since her
fi rst calving.
Castledale Performer Flora 4 BFE94-4E LP70 was born in 1996, a year later than
Jade 4, and is from the best family bred at Castlemahon, County Down. She
has been a lovely cow to work with and has never suffered mastitis or required
excessive attention. She has bred two heifers, one of which is BFE and numerous
bulls which have been sold for breeding. Flora 4 has also been contract mated to
provide a bull with a leading AI company which is no surprise when you learn her
dam, an BFE93-7E cow by Foxhole Panatella, is still milking in the herd and her

Castledale To put these achievements into perspective, it has to be borne in mind that the Castledale herd is only
Performer 120 strong and there are a further six BFE93 cows from a total of 53 BFE and 40 BFVG of the 120 British
Flora 4 EX94- Friesians in the Castledale herd. The current stock bull has been bred from one of these. Castledale Echo

on the farm until her second lactation, but she is still producing with no signs of stopping any time soon!
Castledale cows may not have dominated headlines previously, but these hidden gems are no diamonds in the
rough and may just shine brighter in the future.
