KATHERINE STRACHAN
AND ROBERT MANNING
Katherine (Rendham Holsteins) and Robert Manning were married on 5th
September at 10am in Stowmarket Registry office before going their sepa-
rate ways to change into formal wedding gear (Katherine was very greedy
and had 2 dresses!) for a celebration ceremony on the farm at Rendham.
Robert is the Account Director at Jacob Bailey, a marketing and design agency
in Shoreditch, London. The couple used to go out at school, then didn’t
see each other for 7 years! Home is Forest Gate, near Stratford in London
although Katherine is now living at the farm Monday to Thursday building up
PEOPLE
the family’s Marybelle Dairy business. We wish them both well in their future
life together.
Robert Strachan 1916 – 2009
It is with regret that on the same page we report Katherine Strachan’s wedding, we have
to announce the death of her grandfather, Robert, who sadly died before seeing Katherine
married. Robert was born at the family farm at Laigh Crewburn, Strathhaven and left school
at 14 to work at home. In 1944 Robert married Mary Liddell and moved to Suffolk where
the Liddell family were then farming. Later that year, Robert was lucky to be selected by
Benacre Estate to rent the 410 acre Church Farm at Wrentham Suffolk and he transported his
12 Ayrshire cows from Strathhaven to Lowestoft Station by rail, with other farming equip-
ment. To save expense, Robert walked the cows 15 miles from the station to the farm. Over
the years he built up two large dairies before eventually buying Rendham Hall dairy farm
where Robert’s elder son David, wife Colette and family run the very successful Marybelle
operation which was featured in the August 2009 Journal. Our condolences to the Strachan
family.
CAPTION COMPETITION
The last caption competition brought in an
unprecedented level of responses so we decided
to print two winning submissions. Both Phil
Halhead of Norbreck Genetics and Clive Bason
at Wright Manley receive a Society tie for their
efforts.
Phil: ‘Do you mind, we’ve only just met!’
Clive: ‘Down a bit, left a bit. Ah, that’s better’
David Crack Jnr was this year’s All Breeds All
Britain Holstein judge and he thoroughly
enjoyed the experience - perhaps a little too
much looking at this picture! Suggestions for
the next caption on a postcard please, or
email info@holstein-uk.org
