Faiyum
This nome is attested from the Bent Pyramid chapel of Sneferu, at which time the main city was Atfih. This nome sign is generally shown without a standard and the area was
created fairly late in the Thinite period. It is thought that 22 UE, 13 LE and 1 LE did not have administration and/or collection areas for “royal tributes”, but that the contributions
were delivered directly to the king’s palace. The Wadi Tura is also thought to have been in this nome. During the New Kingdom, the Faiyum region was divided into two urban
districts (northern and southern) each having its own administrator. Mention is made to this nome in Dynasty 26 as having a town (or estate) with the name if Kai. This nome
was also called Ta-she (the Land of the Lake), or Mer-wer (the Great Lake) – both names meaning Lake Moeris. According to some scholars, Arsinoe received independent
administration at a late stage, having originally been a dependency of nome 21 UE. Called the Aphroditoplites nome by the Ptolemies.
