The Nomes of Ancient Egypt
_______________________

While the three powerful confederacies or proto-kingdoms were competing for supremacy in
southern Egypt, there many autonomous groups of people in the northern regions. It is not
known how the nomes were first differentiated, although it has been suggested, by some
scholars, that the Dynastic nome system was a continuation of territorial divisions that
evolved during the late Proto-dynastic period. It is generally agreed2 that the nome system
had its origin in the early Dynastic period, with many of the nomes being permanently
established by Dynasty 5. A changing pattern of nomes and their boundaries existed until
the late Old Kingdom.
