A Sense of Community
By Kelly Byrd

birds, the Outer Banks
is home to a popula-
tion as diverse as any
large city. The promise of sun, sand
and waves seems to be responsible
for the massive migration to our
coastal neighborhoods.
With such diverse citizenry,
one might wonder what effect this
has on our sense of community. A
quick glance at a coffee shop bul-
letin board or a flip through the
local paper confirms even a diver-
gent community unites when
needed.
From private fundraisers to
non-profits, the Outer Banks is a
community ready to rise to the oc-
casion and meet the needs of its
residents without regard to their
origin. It’s these selfless acts of kind-
ness that define what being a part
of this community means to all who
call it home. “I would rather help
someone who’s struggling and
make do with less because that’s
who I am,” attests Mike Nolan, a
