rector before the appointment of Joe Ac-
cardi.
The OSWCA has put its money into
education, with support for a new Mc-
Master University Chair in Heavy Con-
struction and a $125,000 contribution
towards a new Centre for Sustainable
Technologies at Georgian College’s Bar-
rie Campus.
“The new programs are vital particu-
larly when you look at the shortage we’re
anticipating due to the retirement of our
aging workforce,” Clark said. “In Ontario
alone, we anticipate between now and
2016, we will need 60,000 new workers
in civil construction in over 50 job cate-
gories just to replace the retiring work-
force.
“This does not take into account addi-
tional people to meet the needs of in-
creased spending by all levels of
government to accommodate growth as
well as replacing crumbling infrastruc-
ture.”
The association is also supporting and
encouraging young people at the high
school level to learn about and consider
careers in the trades.
