Watch it
One of the films I’ve been most impressed
with recently has been The Hurt Locker, a truly
gripping Iraq War drama. If you can find a cinema
which is still running it, go out and give it a bash.
For those looking for something a little bit more
escapist then look no further than Zombieland.
It has Bill Murray, Woody Harrelson, Jesse
Eisenberg, loads of zombies and even more
genuine laughs. Watching it is a very, very decent
way to spend an evening.
Wear it
At last! With Autumn well and truly underway, it’s
time to dig out the fur. Whether you opt for a fur
collar, a Russian fur hat or a cosy fur coat, there
really is no beating it for warmth and style. Shove
a cropped fur jacket on over jeans and slip on a
pair of black leather gloves for the ultimate chic
winter look. Keep an eye out for Tissavel - faux
fur coats made using the same techniques as real
fur giving them an authentic look without all of
the moral quandaries.
Hear it
American indie extroverts The Mountain Goats
could have themselves a late contender for album
of the year with their latest effort The Life Of The
World To Come. It’s a thrillingly well constructed
album, equal parts high tempo rock record and
tuneful ballad collection. Hopefully 2009 proves
to be the year these guys really make it big both
here and at home. They deserve it.
Eat it
Ichiban on Glasgow’s Queen Street is a great
place to grab inexpensive but extremely edible
noodle and sushi dishes. There’s a great menu
on offer and the fantastic staff will be more than
happy to help you make your choice if dishes
are proving too tricky to choose from. Open and
lively, it’s a great place to meet friends or take a
prospective partner on a fun date. Don’t forget to
try some of the special drinks on offer, they’re just
as tasty as the dishes.
Drink it
When most people think about American beers
they think of lagers like Miller, Coors and Budweiser.
Essentially, cheap, mass produced fizzy crap.
Things really aren’t that grim over the Atlantic
though, with a more than impressive craft brewery
scene on the go the US is actually making some of
the best beers on the planet. Possibly the best of
the bunch is Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. It’s a moreish,
hoppy, slightly spicy brew with enough kick to it to
get your night started. Better still it’s increasingly
available in Scotland’s best bars and off licences.
