TAyLOr TreNSCH
Rage: last time you were extremely embarrassed?
TT: I fell face-first in the airport bathroom earlier today. That was pretty
embarrassing ...and gross.
Rage: a television show that you try and watch as often as possible?
TT: I am really digging Mad Men at the moment but Arrested Develop-
ment will always be my favorite.
Rage: First celebrity encounter that had your stomach in butterflies?
TT: Jeff Goldblum. His performance in Jurassic Park is momentous.
Rage: Your favorite thing to do on a day off?
TT: Sleep.
Rage: The first musical soundtrack you bought on CD?
TT: West Side Story.

supportive. I worry that some will go bankrupt if they keep coming to the show!
It is amazing to see a group of people get so excited about a musical, especially
because a majority of the fans are in an age bracket not commonly associated with
theatre patronage.
Rage: as an actor, how do you prepare each night to transform into this character? as the
play takes place in 1891 yet, musically it’s modern. That duality must be a difficult aspect to
realize.
TT: My pre-show ritual consists of getting into costume really early, jumping
around like a crazy person, and singing a song by a band I am obsessed with (cur-
rently: The Avett Brothers). you know, the material is so strong that I find it to be
quite easy to lose myself in the play night after night.
Rage: The reality is that your character is a tragic one and the only time that you as Moritz
get to explore your own thoughts and emotions in such a straight-laced society is when you
emote in song.
TT: yes. During the scenes of the play I am Moritz Stiefel living in an uber-repres-
sive, century-old environment. Then, as soon as a song begins, I am able to escape
to 2009 and comment on the story as Taylor Trensch. It is extremely invigorating
to break out of a dialogue with one of the stifling authority figures of the show and
rebel by means of Duncan Sheik’s brilliant indie rock score.
