Squash Prepares for
Annual Championship
T
he club hosts the Oregon Squash
Championship Thursday, Nov. 5
through Sunday, Nov. 8. The champion-
ship has been running since the mid 1980s
and is one of the major fall tournaments in
the Pacific Northwest.
MAC member Anders Giltvedt has
been organizing the event since 1984.
“One of the key things for me is to attract
a high number of participants, rather than
the best players,” he says. “Unless you get
volume, you don’t get a lot of emotion
behind it.” About 100 players are expected.
The event often attracts players who’ve
never competed in a tournament before.
“I always try to keep the tournament
high-value in terms of food, drink and
prices,” Giltvedt explains. “That’s how you
keep the numbers up, particularly in this
economy.” Players come from all over the
West Coast, as well as from some inland
states such as Arizona, Idaho and Utah.
The championship has a lot of loyal
backers, including many local businesses,
who provide prizes, food and drink. Some
have been sponsoring the tournament for
16 years.
