intro
cardiff
Studying in Cardiff? Then you’re lucky enough to be in one of the best
student cities in the country. Everything is within walking distance, and
with the hordes of young people descending on the city at Cardiff Univer-
sity, UWIC, and the ATRiuM (part of Glamorgan Uni), you’d expect it to be
student-friendly. And it is.
There literally is something for everybody on the city’s nightlife landscape.
Seasoned clubbers try out Walkabout or Oceana, or for more alternative
taste, venues such as Barfly and Clwb Ifor Bach will please your live music
palate. There are numerous cosy little bars and pubs scattered throughout
the more studenty parts of town too, so get hunting.
Cardiff University students are also lucky to have a really fantastic stu-
dents’ union which provides a wide variety of entertainment; comedy, gigs,
club nights – it’s all on your doorstep and it’s all rather cheap. Hurrah.
Should you fancy a break from all that ‘studying’, broaden your horizons
with one of Cardiff’s many cultural treats. Museums, art galleries, the
castle, and theatres are all within a couple of minutes’ walk of the uni, and
if you’re motivated enough to go the distance, there’s a veritable wonder-
land of cultural delights on offer.
Cardiff Bay’s just down the road too, with its unending eating and drinking
offerings, and of course, the city centre itself is positively exploding with
shops, all waiting to annihilate your student loan.
Cardiff really is a city that has it all, and you’re about to spend three care-
free years there. Lucky sod.
glamorgan
The University of Glamorgan has in the past been given a bad rap due to
its former status as a polytechnic, but having had a financial and academic
overhaul the likes of which the Extreme Makeover team would be proud of,
the Valleys’ university now tells a very different story.
Creeping ever higher up the league tables, Glamorgan has a good reputa-
tion for its English and Creative writing department, and the multi-million
pound ATRiuM campus is an incubator for Cardiff’s creative talent.
Now, we’re not going to lie: the main campus in Treforest is hilly. Should
you be housed in the illustrious Glamorgan Court you’re gonna have your
work cut out trekking up and down for classes and to the Union, but hell,
when the sun comes out and you’re admiring the lush green hills in the
distance, it’s worth it. Plus it’s a really handy way of staving off the fresh-
man 14.
The village itself is compact, but has everything to keep 7,000-plus student
residents happy: a small Tescos (and a large one down the road), a bunch
of takeaways, numerous bars and pubs, offies, shops, etc. It’s all here. And
the bright lights of Cardiff are just 15 minutes away.
The size and position of the university really does lend itself to a close-knit
community (you won’t be able to walk down the street without seeing a fa-
miliar face), making it a fantastic place to while away three carefree years.
