INSANE IN THE BRAIN
The Sherman, Tue 13-Wed 14 Oct
words BEN BRYANT
An energetic hip-hop dance interpretation of Ken Kesey’s classic novel, Insane In The Brain is a loopy,
highly stylised production that takes the explosive elements of the plot and sets them to a soundtrack that
includes Cypress Hill and System Of A Down.
The production does a decent enough job of distilling the essence of the 1960s novel, although the character-
isation questionable. Randle P. McMurphy isn’t even close to the fiery, redheaded anti-hero of Kesey’s novel,
replaced instead by a dozy, breakdancing waster with a ponytail who lacks any of the charm of Nicholson in
his landmark performance. Nurse Ratched’s laconic, icy manner, meanwhile, is barely visible. This is not a
production that ever sets out to convey the subtleties of Kesey’s novel, and the most moving scenes in the
film serve to actually hinder this stage production’s breakneck pace.
But that’s not really the point, because Insane In The Brain is at its most glorious when it abandons the
shackles of Kesey’s narrative and allows the choreographers’ imaginations to run riot. The opening montage,
a creepy, robotic dance from double-masked figures dressed in black, is brilliantly conceived. A night time
dormitory scene creatively reinterprets the characters’ dementia into a dizzying, energetic dance that makes
clever use of lighting. An 80s Fame interlude that has been shamelessly crowbarred into the production is
charming and gloriously realised. Brimming with energy, enthusiasm and more than a little madness, Insane
In The Brain succeeds in no small part because it is utterly bonkers, winning you over on the strength of its
sheer brazenness and vivacity.
