TOM JONES
Cardiff International Arena. Fri 9 Oct
words ROBIN WILKINSON photo OWEN RICHARDS
Onstage a 69 year-old with an eerie resemblance to Davids Gest and Bellamy sweats vigorously under a
cropped leather mac. He wipes his sweat-drenched face with a Welsh dragon flannel and throws it back into
the adoring audience. The band launch into a spirited cover of Burning Down The House, originally a 1983
hit for new wave pioneers Talking Heads.
Moments later, 8,000 women of advanced years below enthusiastically along to Sex Bomb, Sir Tom’s 1999
self-descriptive comeback hit, and the impression is of a menopausal Nuremberg Rally. What the bloody hell
is going on?
There are many things incongruous about a Tom Jones gig: the proud Welshman who’s spent the last 10
years living in LA. But such cynicism is impossible to maintain. Chatting to various cousins beforehand, all
are gushing about the generosity of Tom Jones Woodward, recounting tails of a Brains-fuelled reunion weeks
earlier, and how even as a boy Tom was “good as gold”.
The moves may be a little rustier, but Tom happily flirts and – huh! – grunts his way through an energetic,
hit-packed, two-hour set. The Voice is still intact, if anything gaining resonance with advancing years, like
an aging but virile sealion commanding the ocean. And before long the CIA – never the most atmospheric of
venues – has taken on the atmosphere of, well, a Brains-fuelled family reunion. Middle-aged women gaily link
arms and dance in the aisles, whilst stoic husbands tap their feet approvingly. The Voice and the Legend, it
seems, remain strong.
