BROADCAST
Mon 7 Dec, Cinema 1, Chapter Arts Centre, Cardiff
Tickets: £9. Info: 029 2030 4400.
When Broadcast first emerged from their Birmingham homestead in 1996, they
were about as unique as anything out there in the nominal rock format got. Their
songs were catchy yet hella weird, vintage-sounding yet alive to possibility; the
repetitive drumbeats, haunted-house organ and Trish Keenan’s shivery vocals
made for an experience that was kinda spooky, yet also carried a peculiar glow of
nostalgia for... something you couldn’t quite remember.
They had touching points with some other bands, like Stereolab and The United

Broadcast mined their own groove, and have settled into it over the years, rarely

like all or most of them. With their latest release, on the Warp label like all their
albums to date, the duo (Keenan and James Cargill) have teamed up with The pg 57

label, Ghost Box. Ghost Box has gained a cult following for its creepy, soundtrack-

y and vaguely British musical aesthetic, so this is a logical collaborative venture.
Tonight’s show will be in two parts: the first finds Broadcast performing a sound-

track to one of Julian House’s films, the second is a set of their ‘normal’ songs. If
you go to this on a date and do that ‘pretend to stretch and put your arm round
their shoulder’ thing, you may find that you are embracing a HEADLESS GHOST.
