058 PROJECT / MOSCHINO, NEW YORK CITY 059
Moschino’s heart-shape icon is recreated by custom

rants and cafes, the meatpackers departed
for the Outer Boroughs.
Moschino’s former New York presence had
been a five-story townhouse on upper Madi-
son Avenue. It closed in 2002 as the strategy
shifted to a site with the ability to display
all its categories on one floor, appealing
to a younger clientele in a more trafficked
area. Current brands include Moschino for
women and men, Moschino Cheap and Chic,
Love Moschino, the jeans line, and acces-
sories.
The challenge of physically turning the
sturdy but long-neglected building into
a showcase for the international luxury
brand was given to Shawmut Design and
Construction, builders of New York flagships
including Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana, Nokia,
Tom Ford, and Juicy Couture. Shawmut’s
first challenge to get the space ready for a
fourth quarter 2008 opening was the floor.
“It was totally unusable,” says Les Hiscoe,
vice president of Boston-based Shawmut’s
Retail Group. “It had to be entirely recon-
structed before we could install the white
composite stone throughout the selling
area,” Hiscoe points out. Tan and chocolate
area rugs in an updated floral pattern are
woven with iridescent Lurex yarns. Stainless
steel heart outlines were inlaid into floor
tiles in Italy and then installed at the site in
a random pattern.
Moschino’s heart-shape icon appears first as
a front door handle. Inside, a multi-pendant
layered central chandelier features dozens
of Plexiglas hearts. Lighting designer Walter
Amort of Studio Amort accented the heart
shape chandeliers and recessed adjustable
lighting sources. “For the multiple heart
ceiling fixtures, custom made by Sice in
Milan, there is one 10W halogen lamp per
heart,” Amort explains. “The recessed
fixtures combine Cooper’s Portfolio fixtures
