Epilogue

It’s drizzling. It’s been raining nearly every day.

The grass look fresh and healthy. Must remember to paint that wall. What was
the colour of the paint again? I can remember the codes.

Sheila’s the best when it comes to things like this. She does it with ease. I
remember when we first moved into our new home about five years ago, she
handled all the details. From organizing the painters, lighting, plaster ceiling, you
name it, she did it. I just paid for everything!

She’s the best thing that happened to me. Well, after getting that scholarship to
do my law degree in London that is. Ha, ha, She’ll kill me if she heard me.

“Darling, what are you doing outside? It’s going to rain heavily as usual. Come
inside and have some tea. The maid has also made those sweet potato cakes
you like so much. Better come inside and have your tea dear. Before, Vijay and
Lakshmi get their hands on them!” “ Ok Madam Siew Lian. Coming!”.

That’s who I married. My childhood sweetheart. All those hair combing and
football heroics surely paid off, I smiled to myself thinking of the good old times.

I have come a long way.

A beautiful bungalow house. A lovely wife and best friend. Twin children. Aaaah,
Vijay and Lakshmi. Four years old next month.

The Chinese have a saying you know. Dragon and Phoenix. Very lucky if you
have twins and even luckier if you have one boy and one girl.

Especially your first kids.

And I do feel lucky. I feel blessed.

Although Appa is no longer with us and the twins will grow up not knowing their
‘Tata’ or grandfather, at least Amma is still with us. I’m so happy that she agreed
to leave the old rickety house and come live with us.

My business is growing and I have enough to provide for her and everyone. She
also looks happier now. It’s been ten years since Appa left us and she did take a
long time to get over the loss.
