Now, Vijay thought, Appa was old. His hair, whatever was left of it, was grey. He
was also using too much of that smelly ointment. He shouldn’t have listened to
that nosy neighbour Mrs Navaratnam. Her direct marketing business was a bit
dodgy thought Vijay.
He had advised Amma about that.
Vijay looked at Muthu, who was skipping on some loose pavement bricks as they
trudged along to Appa’s sundry shop which was located about three blocks away
from home.
He was a good kid but he needs to have an opportunity. He needs a break to get
that education.
To achieve something useful in life. He also needs someone to look up to.
Muthu stopped skipping and bent down, picking up something on the road.

Vijay looked at his younger brother and smiled.
