SCOTTISH WINNER - Errolston
For the third successive year, Scotland was represented by Brian
and Valerie with son Craig Davidson of the Errolston herd.
Located in Dumfries, the 525 acre farm of which 160 acres is
grain was established in 1980. In 2001, Foot and Mouth resulted
in them having to re-stock their herd and cows from the Lliwe
herd in South Wales provided the base with other individuals
purchased along the way.
Currently they have around 200 young stock and 200 cows
averaging 10,400 kg at 4.02% fat and 3.19% protein, amongst
which are 43 EX and over 100 VG’s. They are cubicle housed in
one group and fed TMR with no feeding in the parlour.
With type as a priority when it comes to breeding, the sires they
have been using recently include Million, Sanchez, Scooby Doo,
September Storm and Maestro. From the heifers and second
calvers group in the herd this year, they are impressed with the
Talent’s as all daughters so far are milking well.
The cow families that stand out at the moment in the herd are both
their favourite, the Rosette family originating from Lliwe and the Fran
family.
The Errolston herd have had the Champion Heifer three times at Agri-
Scot; in 2002 with Formation Ricki, flushed successfully to Talent,
Goldwyn and Shottle, in 2004 with Dante Tessie, and then again last
year with Stannock Talent Kiwi.
