aggressive chemotherapy and radiation. As a result I
lost my car, my hair, my breasts, even my fingernails
and toenails. And I almost lost my home. But, when
the disease and fight seemed truly insurmountable,
humor showed me see a silver lining.
Since I couldn’t change my cancer, I decided to
change the way I looked at my cancer. And so my altar
ego, Chemo Barbie, was born! All of a sudden, breast
cancer meant no more shaving or waxing! (An added
bonus in the heat of summer!) My skin? It became
peaches and cream…almost like a free facelift! And
bad hair days? Non-existent! Especially when I was
sporting a wig that would make Kim on the Real
Housewives of Atlanta drool with envy.
People often ask me, how I handle it all? I just
laugh and tell them, ‘It’s all smoke and mirrors with
a little T.V. touch up.’ The truth is, without my wig
and breast prosthesis, I look like my friend’s 9 year
old son. And, thank God for eyelash extensions.
Without them, I look like the crypt keeper on crack!
I remember when my fingernails started popping
off at work like Lee Press-On Nails. My co-workers
totally freaked out and started ransacking the office,
looking for super glue or band aids. I was like, what
exactly are we going to glue them to? My skin?!!!
Surviving breast cancer has transformed me,
both inside and out. Before I got sick, much of my
identity was wrapped up in my physical appearance.
I was Barbie. But giving up my looks forced me to
